C. Loflin founded Presbyterian Parents of Gays and Lesbians, Inc.,
in 1994 at Dallas, Texas. Loflin, the mother of a gay son, saw a need
for a ministry with mothers and fathers within the Presbyterian Church,
(U.S.A.), in which parents could come together to share their feelings
of pain and isolation in an environment of concern, compassion, and spiritual
nurture. The pastoral care ministry welcomes and includes parents of all
faiths, beliefs and backgrounds. Support groups were established in Dallas,
TX; La Cañada/Glendale, CA; Raleigh, NC; Seattle, WA; Albany/Watervliet,
NY; and Norwalk, CT. Loflin is an ordained elder and member of First Presbyterian Church, Dallas. She was elected by Grace Presbytery as a commissioner to the 1991 General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). She has served on the boards of Grace Presbyterian Village and the Dallas Pastoral Counseling and Education Center, two terms on the latter as president. In recognition of her pastoral care contributions to parents with homosexual children, Loflin was chosen in June 1997 as one of ten 'Presbyterians Making a Difference' by the editors of Presbyterians Today, the denomination's national magazine. Loflin retired in 1994 after ten years as administrator of Grace Presbytery. Prior to that position, she was employed with the Greater Dallas Community of Churches, First Presbyterian Church, Dallas, and the Dallas Young Adult Institute. She and her husband, Ed, have resided in Dallas since 1952. They are the parents of three sons. She is a native of Clarksville, Texas. |
